I appreciate your feedback. > I would highly recommend the Yamaha RM-50 far more than any of these. The Alesis D4 sounds good and is dirt cheap, but is definitely a quick dead end. If you're happy with a few hundred factory presets, then thats the way to go. The R-8 would be slightly better. The Emu Procussion and Yamaha RM-50 are both waveform-based rhythm synthesizers. Primary differences: the Procussion is limited to factory waveforms stored in ROM, while the RM-50 has a slightly larger ROM library PLUS accepts RY- and SY-series waveform cards for expansion PLUS has a non-volatile RAM expansion to load your OWN waveforms via SDS -- so your sound sources are unlimited! Procussion has no trigger inputs, RM-50 has six analog trigger inputs. RM-50 has far more programming features than the Procussion. Both have several assignable outputs. The RM-50 runs just under $500 new and a couple have been advertised on the net for around $425. So the RM-50 is a little less expensive than Procussion also. Procussion owners have been hoping for a ROM expansion for the unit (it has an expansion slot, since its just another box based on the old Proteus architecture), but Emu has announced that they have no plans whatsoever to produce such an expansion. I checked with Emu before making my decision for the RM-50. Hope this helps! henry Article 55193 of rec.music.makers.synth: Path: news.u.washington.edu!news.uoregon.edu!cs.uoregon.edu!reuter.cse.ogi.edu!uwm.edu!lll-winken.llnl.gov!venus.sun.com!news2me.EBay.Sun.COM!engnews2.Eng.Sun.COM!usenet From: vulcan@Eng.Sun.COM (Jeff Whitman [SparcTech]) Newsgroups: rec.music.makers.synth Subject: Re: Drum sound modules Date: 25 Apr 1995 19:46:01 GMT Organization: Sun Microsystems, Inc. How can the RM50 be obsolete already, gee it seems like it just came out a year ago. In any case, this is a wonderful unit, I got one and it is the best drum module on the market. Some information below is not correct though. 1) It has 16 voice polyphony. This does not seem to be a limitation though. 2) It also has an optional .5M sample ram that is battery backed up and you can load samples into it via SDS.
