I've been using a 626 to drive my diy 808/909 drum module for a good while. The internal sounds suck harder than a black hole, but someone probably loves them ;-) It does have limitations in the number of notes that can trigger at the same time - only one sound from a group can trigger on a given beat - and sometimes this can really piss me off, especially as beats entered will be removed by other beats in the same group. It's also a bit short on pattern memory, but you can always do a sysex dump. The preset rhythms are a waste of space once you tire of tekkno 909 rhumba/latin laughs... To select a RAM pattern bank you have to press the bank button twice - miss that second press and out comes a corny preset rhythm - beware if you intend to take it out live as this could be very embarrasing. One of the nicer features is that each pad can output a variable note number on a different midi channel if required, so you could provide a trigger pulse via a cv convertor for an analogue sequencer etc, or even program a simple melody. There are 7 levels of accent you can set for each beat, and the usual 909 type shuffle, flam and scale settings are there too. The interface is very like a 909, but it's a pain having a LCD display instead of LED if you like to look at your gear flashing with the lights out... For the money I paid (should be less than 100 ukp or local equivalent) it's a useful enough tool.
