Of all the Roland X0X boxes I'd have to say the 202 is my favorite. It has the most bang per cubic centimeter than any other synth know and is a most capable CV/gate sequencer in and of itself. As far as imitating a 303 I've had both and depending on what you're doing it will copy it exactly. But why stop there? Flip the octaves slider and instantly go up in pitch sky high. Twidle the Portamento time knob and start you sequence off smooth and work your way into the sliiiide, run two separate cv synths as well as duplicate one of those patterns with the 202 synth engine itself. A full ADSR and all the programming features as well as realtime entry make this an instant ambinet machine as well as an instant acid machine. Chug some looong attack with a bizarro envelope and shove the self mod all the way up. leave the room and come back with your coffee and start to work it. Am-a-zing beast all around. Plus it's wonderfully tiny for commuting. I took mine on a recent business trip and whipped it out once we were in the air with a set of headphones. Yes, X0X stuff DOES make you instantly popular, just ask the stewardess. The 101 is a nice mono certainly. The 303 is unique in it *very* lmited way. The 202 is incredibly flexible and can pick up parts of both the others plus add it's own weirdness in abundance. If I had to choose one (and I did) I'd stick with a 202 any day. Now, if only it stored the damn sequences! out- From nobrand@teleport.comFri Jun 23 14:52:40 1995 Date: Thu, 1 Jun 1995 08:36:57 -0700 From: Brian Coates To: analogue@hyperreal.com Subject: Re: 101 vs. 202 >> >> 101 Pros: ........... > >Don't forget the arpeggiator with external clock input... > > Yes, a good one! And one other important factor I forgot. If you're going to drive a 202 from an external sequencer, there is supposedly some kind of delay before the CV reaches the sound components. It has to go through the CPU first, or something. So the 202 is best when not using it as a slave. Does anyone have any hands on with this? How bad _is_ the delay? Brian
