OK, here's the procedure again... it doesn't sound like you're doing it 
right.

1. Plug MIDI in to MIDI out
2. Set to MIDI<->DCB mode
3. play a key on your synth (should hold the note)
4. switch to MIDI->DCB mode or whatever (should be in POLY mode now)
5. select MIDI channel
