The basic voice architecture and hardware is the same between me: in addition, the Xpander features cv/gate inputs and has the ability to convert cv/gate data to MIDI...altho quantised to semitones. The Xpander has less electronics running off it's power supply and has about three times as much airspace above the voice boards so it runs cooler and supposedly suffers less thermal related breakdowns. later xpanders and m12's were tossed together really fast by workers (rightfully) fearful for their jobs. some of these later synths have anomalous tuning problems and stability issues to deal with because of installed chips which exceed original design specs for the instrument. unfortunately, i don't know where (or when) in the serial number series these problems started. d xpanders and m12s were built on a custom order basis by gibson/oberheim as late as 18 months ago. one big advantage to the m12 is a "modulation routing page" which instantly tells you what's modulating what. one thing to make sure of (assuming you are going to use the thing in a mid to large studio) in the m12 is that it has been retro'ed with the 12 separate output kit. any AHngels out there have info on the serial number series for xpanders and m12s? (that metlay character comes to mind here.... ) ;^] xout ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lx Rudis what is a DJ if he can't scratch? 415.882.1730 Voice lx@fht.com Foley Hi-Tech 415.882.1733 Fax http://www.fht.com 185 Berry Street 415.882.1735 BBS ftp.fht.com San Francisco, CA 94107 http://www.fht.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- xxox|xoxx|oxxo|xxxx xoxo|xxox|xoxx|oxxo There it is.
