This thing is extremely fat and fun to play - I haven't had as much raw analog pleasure since Dr Voltage the MemoryMoog was in the studio. Somehow, the OBs get lost under the storm of Xpanders, Jupiters, and Prophets that people are always talking about! So go get one - sell your JV80 to get one ;-> The details: Oberheim OB8 1983-1985 (approx) 8 Voice, 2 VCO per voice. VCF switchable from 2-pole and 4 pole lowpass. 3 LFOs - each with 7 modes - retriggerable or free run. 1 Filter EG, 1 VCA EG 120 Programs, 12 Splits, 12 Doubles (So far, pretty tame) the front panel is switchable to Panel 2 Mode, offering: Lfo Ramp generators, Portamento Quantize LFO Quantize amount, LFO Phase invert LFO REtrigger, Trigger point set, Individual Voice Tuning. (Hmmm) 8 Individual Voice Panning Pots, Arpeggiator, Portamento, Unison Mode, Oscillator sync, etc. Control: 61 Key Non Velocity Keyboard, Dual Lever Pitch bend/modulation Oberheim Serial Interface for DSX Midi In/Out/Thru (software rev B5) Arpeggio Clock in VCA, VCF pedal ins. Essentially, the OB8 was an OBXa with integrated voice boards (4 voices per board as opposed to 1 per board on the Xa), and juiced up software. Even with page 2, the level of control was pushing the interface - leading to the Xpander's almost infinite level of control due to the "pages" interface. That's the scoop - did I miss anything? Not much: Sync (of course!) 90 degree phase shift for LFO in half of the voices 3 Portamento modes: linear, expo, equal time LFO rate modulation LFO rate keyboard tracking (1/4 Oct./Volt) Best analogue strings of the world!!! OB-8 B5 Software Revision 8-15-84 New Features #1) Sustain footswitch has now been added to the MIDI interface. #2) When the OB-8 is connected to a DSX, the CV/GATE outputs can be routed to the MIDI outputs without sounding the internal OB-8 voices (the DSX manual said that Rev B-4 added this feature-SP). #3) Over all speed of the the OB-8 had been increased to allow the DSX to communicate with the OB-8 faster. #4) Range of the vibrato lever has been increased. Hope this helps. Steve palmersd@dunx1.ocs.drexel.edu
