I just have to pipe in here to give a word to a Moog that *doesn't* suck but not many people seem to know about. The venerable Multimoog. This baby is one of the later models but isn't cheesy or cheaply made (a la Prodigy, Micro, etc). It has two Osc which can be synced and such but has a number of whistles and bells that I haven't seen on many other synths. 1. Assignable pressure keyboard. Kind of like aftertouch you can route the filter, pitch bend, Oscs etc to the pressure of the keyboard. This is very cool when you're going for a sexy physically tortured crying note or sound. 2. S/H triggered from Keyboard or other source. 3. A bizarre setup of two envelopes (attack and decay only) one on the filter and one called Loudness. 4. Very good filter. It's got balls but can also do smooth and bizarre noises. 5. Varying Waveforms. On both Oscs. You can dial the waveform to gradients in between the actual waves. (the minimoog forces you to click it on one of the stages.) 6. Filter contour, selectable release waves, cool ribbon cable assignable to A or A+B, assignable mod wheel, etc 7. Tons of inputs, outputs for controlling filter, osc., that damn moog s-trig stuff, a dozen trim pots or so, etc etc. 8. Easy to use! I did more on thsi in one night than I've been able to do on an Odysessy in months. It's laid out very well and rates, routings, and such are plainly displayed. This baby is probably one of my favorite noisemakers to PLAY. With delay and reverb and a little creativity it can be a one man show in and of itself. Hit a note, bend an overtone with the ribbon cable, warp it to hell and leave it there with the filter contour, etc. Physically it's about 3 1/2 octaves but not that deep. All controls are knobs and switches on the top and the keys are pretty hefty and feel strong (not clacky at all). Anyone else use one of these babies? I have some more technical info and a few questions if anyone cares to stab at them send me email and we'll trade notes. Also are there any other "forgotten" moogs that aren't on the Mini hype but really do standup one their own? Dig it...
