How it works... Ummm you plug it in and turn on the power and press a few keys and the sound comes out! :) The DS8 is my favourite instrument (owned it since the first day it came out with the SQD1 and DDD1) Its basically a two oscillator synth with fm processing in the background. Its a really weird instrument and you can get some really nice sounds out of it. The basic way it is setup is as follows: OSC 1 OSC 2 ADSR OSC OSC 1 WAVEFORM (SYNC - Called XMOD) OSC 2 WAVEFORM TIMBRE 1 and ADSR (Filter) TIMBRE 2 and ADSR (Filter) AMPLIFIER 1 and ADSR AMPLIFIER 2 and ADSR LFO Plus the usuall digital stuff and the effects section. The effects section is pretty crap as it is noisy as ***** (insert favourite word) but you can get some good flanging and chorusing out of it. The DS8 came out just after Yamaha bought them out. Its laid out like a normal DCO-DCF-DCA-LFO synth as you can see above. There are no algorythms to worry about. There are sliders on de front that can change filtering and balance. These sliders dont send sysex which cheezes me off! There is spliting, layering (which i use all the time) and seeings its eight voices you can split it into 8 mono synths all with the same keyboard range and different fx's! This can prove really dangerous to your life as you can get some really wild sounds in this mode. Ummm... there is a ROM update for it that fixes the problem with sysex (it used to receive sysex from anything!) and it also beefs up the sound. The Korg 707 Strap On is the same but minus the effects, weight, baclit lcd. If you want more than let us know! fleep! The DS-8 is a big empty box with an FB01 (or DX-100) circuit board in it, with some added firmware to support the four "intuitive" UI sliders, which Korg added so that nonmegadweebs could tweak the sounds. I assume it programs just like a 4-op sinewave FM box. I'm looking for a 707, which is just a trimmed-down DS-8, minus the delay line, to complete my set of non-Yamaha FM boxes. I've got the English/German one, and one of the two (known to me) Italians. I seem to recall some major flaw like not being able to save your tweaks (the sliders) into a patch. This might mean that it is close to being sysexe compatible with some Yamaha box. The sliders duplicate the timbre and amp so just prgram those in instead. I usually get a sound close enuff with the sliders set to 0 and then tweak those when i want to tweak the sound. Then just read where the slider is and redit the timbre etc... fleep!
