I got one on closeout but I can't remember the name of the place...It's on the address label of the box at home, I'll try and look for it tonight. The basic feature list? 17 sliders (16 assignable, 1 dedicated to master volume -- it sends out volume messages to all 16 channels if you bump it) 2 MIDI IN/OUT/THRU. The two midi inputs by default merge to both MIDI outputs, but sysex only gets transmitted on OUT 1. The standard modes are (and I'm giving Kawai terminology) Volume Fader -- 16 channels of MIDI volume messages + Master Volume Velocity Offset -- 16 channels of slider-selectable offsets to be added to incoming note messages. Velocity Absolute-- 16 channels of slider-selectable velocities. Note-on messages are modified to take the velocity from the slider. Channel Control -- For one channel, maps the 16 sliders to Bender, Volume, Modulation, Breath Control, Foot Controll, Portamento, Balance, Pan, Expression, Damper, Pressure, Pitch Bend Sensitivity, Fine Tuning, Coarse Tuning, Fine Tuning, and RESERVED (whatever that is, some CC...) Key Balance -- Each slider adds a velocity offset to a 1.5 octave range of midi note messages. MIDI setups -- transmits 16 channels of volume or program changes at one go... Channel Converts -- remaps midi channels. Various split modes ... Sysex editing for Kawai K1, K4 and XD5. You can set up some Sysex patches of your own, but it's extremely limited -- only one byte of binary data can be controlled by the slider, and the message is at most 16 bytes long. It can take some of the pain out of editing the XD5 patches, but there's stuff that still has to be done from the front panel. One nice thing about the XD5 is that it can handle note messages and sysex at the same time, so you can tweak real time. Careful with that resonance though, as it gets really obnoxious. Power from a wall wart. Other than that -- it's got crap rubber buttons that you sometimes have to hit a couple of times to get them to register. It's black and cute. They were blowing them out for $150 or something. Unless you've got a kawai box you want to control with it, you're probably better off saving up for a Peavey 1600. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kent Williams kent@inav.net (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax) From map@cs.washington.edu Fri May 3 10:47:04 1996 3 May 96 13:47:01 +0500 2 May 96 17:56:31 +0500 ID ; Thu, 2 May 1996 17:02:29 -0400 (EDT) ID ; Thu, 2 May 1996 17:01:08 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 2 May 1996 14:00:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike Perkowitz Subject: Re: Kawai Midi fader/Mixer??? > The two midi inputs by default merge to both MIDI outputs, but sysex > only gets transmitted on OUT 1. the peavey only has one input, which is merged with the slider data. it also has no master volume slider (though sliders can be set to control other slides, even a whole group of them). > Velocity Offset -- 16 channels of slider-selectable offsets to be added > to incoming note messages. > Velocity Absolute-- 16 channels of slider-selectable velocities. Note-on > messages are modified to take the velocity from the slider. the peavey cant do anything like this, modifying incoming messages. i'd dearly love to be able to modify the note number of incoming messages or the value of incoming controller messages with slider values.. that would let you implement a virtual analogue sequencer by diddling incoming values as you go. i suppose with the kawai and a synth that lets you map velocity to anything, you can get some weirdo effects :) > Key Balance -- Each slider adds a velocity offset to a 1.5 octave > range of midi note messages. weird. interesting idea, but who thought this was more important than a good sysex implementation? ;) > You can set up some Sysex patches of your own, but it's extremely limited -- > only one byte of binary data can be controlled by the slider, and the message > is at most 16 bytes long. the peavey is more capable at this stuff.. just wanted to provide some additional comments.. from what kent said, the mm16 can do a few cool things the peavey cant. and if you've got a kawai box (anyone want to buy my k4r?) it may be less painful than programming the sysex yourself ;) now let's hear some in-depth info on the lexicon MRC. nick rothwell on his web pages says it's quite deep, even though it only has four sliders.. m ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "Coffee should be blacker than hell, stronger than death, and sweeter than love." -- Turkish Proverb ----------------------------------------------------------------------- home: www.cs.washington.edu/homes/map/ grooveneedle records: www.hyperreal.com/music/labels/grooveneedle/ music machines: www.hyperreal.com/machines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- mike perkowitz map@cs.washington.edu tint@grooveneedle.com
