From rmartin@cc.UManitoba.CAMon Jul 17 09:46:41 1995 Date: Sun, 16 Jul 1995 22:56:19 -0500 (CDT) From: Richard Martin To: analogue@hyperreal.com Subject: Akai AX60 musings Well, after that little bit of excitment with the CS15, and the many fans who wrote in... well, okay, thats a bit much.... lets say I got some encouragement to keep writing... Another synth I have been using on almost every song I have been performing lately is the AX60 from Akai. 'Why?' you ask. Well, heres my top ten list for my AX60. 10. Its got knobs! well, okay levers. and some buttons! 9. VCOs, not DCOs! And it stays in tune. 8. Its got an arpegiator 7. Can split the keyboard for two sounds at once! (bitimbral) 6. Lots of letters on the back (its reads "AKAI AX60") so you can make other words with just a little tape and some white-out, so the audience has something to read while watching you perform 5. 2 independant EGs 4. a really loud (as in noisy) chorus that I have sampled for a wave sound during a video for TV 3. pulse width modulation 2. Hi pass filter, which, with the low pass filter, can make a band pass filter! and the number one feature of of the AKAI AX60 is... Cool feature in the VCF section which allows modulation with the VCO producing the wierdest distortion sound known to mankind. The manual only says that "this unique feature produces musically useful timbre shifts when moved; the action is similar to tone control, but more sophisticated". hehehe As an aside... on the back of my Juno2, Roland has been done up in duct tape and white-out to read ROLAIDS. Its actually gotten me a gig :) I would love to see other top ten lists, as well as any ideas for substituting words on the back of synths. Richard NOiSE -- "the Moog 900 system is a remarkable synthesis of the best features of the classical electronic music tehnique, the RCA Sound Synthesizer, and computer-generated sound programming, with great convenience and 'cybernetic engineering.'"
