One day, the folks at ARP got outta bed and thought "Hey, the world needs something newer than those old and tired pitch and mod wheels" so let's get weird... PPC stands for (if I 'member right) Porpotional Pressure Controller. On the late model Axxes, Oddyseys, and even the 2600s they put three white hard-rubber pads (about 1/2" square) on the left side of the keyboard. In order, they were Bend down, Modulation and Bend Up. As you pushed on the pads, they would do their thing, the harder you pushed, the more they did. The thing that drove me up a wall with them was trying to bend... The modulation wasn't so bad, (but you couldn't add a bit of mod and leave the wheel there). Trying to do bend phrases with those pads was hard, you ended up doing a three fingered thing which left your ring finger on the bend down pad, or possibly your middle finger if you had your thumb on the bend up. I dunno about you, but my left hand strength ain't the best, and my ring left finger is pretty damn weak.
