Mine says it >was overhauled in 10/78 on the back, I was 8 years old! I thought I had >all this straight, but a few trips later and my memory is kaput. ;> In fact, it seems that there were even more Odyssey models. All Odysseys had model numbers starting with 28 (2800, 2810 and so). The white models were the first (Odyssey I). They had an encapsulated 12 dB/oct filter, no CV in/outs, no filter in and no XLR out. They featured a pitch bend knob (as opposite to later models with the PPC). The white models were followed with the first "black" run (with golden lettering) that had 24 dB/oct filters and all the additional ins and outs (CV and XLR audio). There were also some modifications (different keyboard circuity) and some of the later models already featured the PPC pitch bender. I don't know when ARP made the infamous "visual redesign" of their production line but this must have been the point when the later black models appeared. They have orange lettering and don't show the ARP logo (the nice treble key on the backside) anymore, instead ARP ODYSSEY is painted in ugly white/orange letters. Also, those models had slider knobs of solid plastic that have the tendency to break and to fall off. Their keyboard extends the front side of the unit so that it is not protected (similar to ARP Quadra). Beside those optical differences there were also technical ones like a redesigned oscillator board and more. To give you an example how this *may* look in certain ways: I own a white Odyssey with "all old" boards. I have a black Odyssey with golden lettering for repair currently that has the new keyboard scanning electronics, the new filter and amp board, but the old oscillator board and a pitch bend knob. The filter module of the white one is encapsulated, the filter of the black one not. BTW, all Odyssey can be retrofitted with CV in/out and filter in, even the white ones. Sorry but I can't help you out with the exact production cycles (this has been before I got into synths). The model and serial number are located at the rear or bottom of the Odyssey chassis. Except for 2800, a typical number might read: 2813-0490. For model 2800, the first two digits of the serial number denote the model, such as: 28490. The Odyssey has undergone major cosmetic and electrical changes since its original production in 1972, however, the functional capabilities have remained virtually unchanged. The following are the most noticeable physical differences among models: MODEL 2800 Black and white face panel (some later models have black and gold face panels). Pitch Bend knob. No Factory installed interface jacks. Wrap around vinyl bottom cover. MODEL 2810-2813 Black and gold face panel. New style power switch. Factory installed interface jackls. Pitch Bend Knob. (Some later models have PPC.) Wrap around vinyl bottom cover. MODEL 2810-2823 (most current model, Odyssey '78) Black and orange face panel. Steel chassis. Leather endblocks. PPC. -------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps.
