White" To: Dylan Joseph The DMX uses 8-bit samples, but uses "companding" digital to analog converters to give a wider dynamic range than a linear 8 bit system -- roughly equivalent to that of 12 bit linear. I don't have too many details on the actual samples, but they were mostly recorded in a pro studio on 1/4 inch tapes. There were some professional musicians involved; Peter Erskine is one name I remember -- I'm sure there were others, and it's probable that many of the sampled sounds were made by Oberheim engineers. The taped sounds were digitized back at the Oberheim lab using a custom analog to digital converter board in an old General Instrument (I think) minicomputer. -- Paul White
