From analogue-owner@hyperreal.com Tue Oct 15 08:58:46 1996 Status: OR Once we discuss this topic here, I would like to give some additional information about the MAQ 16/3. >Yes Cord, I have an MAQ 16/3 (ver. 3) sequencer and love it...There are still things that the ARP sequencer can do easily that the MAQ cannot. For example, the classic effect of speeding up the tempo of the last 3 or 4 notes in a 16 note sequence is extremely easy to do with one row of the ARP. I do not understand this point, but if you speed up the last steps, than you should be out of sync, or? The easiest way would be to controll the speed over note on instead of clock. Anyway, everything is possible. I guess it is time for a fac here. Anyway, if you compare the ARP sequencer with the MAQ, you did this with using the CV/Gates outs only. I think that the CV things at the MAQ are more additional features. This thing was built with midi in mind. So you can controll almost every midi event: MAQ 16/3 is a three row sequencer with each 16 steps! (Software Version 3.00) Events: Note on/off (here you can choose between different modi: highest note is muted (1-5 oct) (break) and their is a nifty relative mode, that means the note you played on the keyboard is tracking the whole sequence!!!) dynamic you can choose the rows it should change the dynamic to! Controller 0-31 Pitch Bend for whole pitch bend and also negativ or positiv only!! Aftertouch here you also can choose for monophon and Polypressure, sure you can also choose the row who should be effected. Midi Channel Programm change Additional with this feature you can add pitch on notes. Timing here you can give every step a specific length (you can choose between 3 ranges with short to long timing shiftings). Mode: You also can change the cycle mode: forward/reverse/back and forward (2 types, on with double played last note and on w/out)/random and one/two shot (the two shot stuff can used to scan two rows in a row!). But this is not all, you also can step the row with note on events!! First/last step: Sure you can choose the first and the last step of each row. Is a cool feature when you want to merge a 16 and a 8 step sequence for example. Prescale: Prescale allows you to adjust the gate time and the length of the note. The gate time adjust the timing of the row. Everything is relative to the midi clock!! With this feature you can speed up or slow down the row easily. Additional: - You can give every row a specific Midi channel. - There is a single step modus where you can step through all adjustments. I used this for building up acCORDs (3 rows with note commands). - You can sync the MAQ to Midi as a master or slave. So it is easy to sync it with your software sequencer and play one hook line after the other in the computer! - Sure you have a CV/Gate out for every row. BTW, you do not have to use the gate signal, so you can use one row for note and the other to adjust the filter cutoff. BTW, every timing parameter, note range and other things are working fine over CV/Gate out!!!!! - There are 30 Presets storing all parameters and knob adjustments. Though, they switch instantly (not like Roland stuff, after ending the row!). - BTW, you can controll everything over Midi. I do not why, but there are also people who like to program the Xpander over Midi!!! :-)) I love this box. I am really not a friend of random music but I am using this thing more as a rhythm controller anyway. However, I played with the older version of the MAQ and wasn't that amazed. But with the Version 3.00 there is nothing what I really would like to add to this machine. I mainly use it with my Matrix-12 and I feel like sitting in front of a huge modular system. Everything is possible, one row to notes, the other to portamento (lag) and the third one is controlling the filter cutoff over dynamic, or do you want to control the attack time??? But however you route the rows, everything works like you want it too (I had other experiences with the Version 2.xx!). And also it has a nice alpha dial knob that makes the input very precise! All in one, the most amazing sequencer I every played with. Anyway, if you are more in CV/Gate triggering you might get a ARP sequencer cheaper. I doubt that you can do more with an ARP sequencer though. If you are in Midi, there is nothing that can beat this thing. I hope I didn't forget anything. All able to run at different speeds length, starting points, etc. All clocked to midi clock and sending out each step on any midi channel with any information. You can choose out of note on/off with different ranges (transpose them with an incoming midi note at the correspondign channel) velocity, aftertouch, any Midi contollers, step length of other tracks, mdid challes of other tracks, etc. You can get really weired sequences by combining different rows with different length together. There is a constant cylce in them. The work seems creative and is fun. What I didn't like was that all pots felt a little weak and unprecise. Nothing to compare to the solid MAckie pots e.g. And the alphdial to setup the sequencer felt weak as well. All in all not the point to avoid a buy, just this "feeling thing". The worst thing is, that I will ship it in 2 or three days when I will recive the english manual. :-) I know there is anotherone out there who has a different view on this :-) CU steve -- * real electronic composers don't like their music be restricted * * to the physical limitations of the human hand - AH - a great list * * Stefan Gruhl * sngruhl@cip.informatik.uni-erlangen.de * * Monthly bonus sig: ************************************************ * "The course of true SOUND never did run smooth" * * freely taken from Midsummernights dream by Willy S. * ********************************************************************* *
