The Roland SH-2000 is one of the older *preset* monosynths. It did have some interesting features, such as primitive aftertouch and easily-controllable filter sliders, but most of the hard work (!!) is stored in hard-wired presets, activated by a large protuding coloured plastic tab along the front edge of the machine. Roland Electronic Musical Instruments catalog v1, circa. 1978: "The SH-2000 is a compact 37 key synthesizer with 30 preset sounds. The unit enhances enjoyment of electronic organ performance (!!) with neither difficulty nor complexity. "- Any one of a wide variety of preset sounds - 21 musical instruments and 9 special sounds: 30 in all - can be selected by a flip of the finger. - Provided with Touch Effect Control and by controlling finger pressure, six performance effects - expression, wow, growl, vibrato and up or down pitch bend - are controllable. - Filter Control changes preset sound freely or even makes it quite different. Three envelope tablets, Hold, Sustain and Repeat, with Portamento Control help create rich variation of sounds." According to the same source, the only jack on the beast is audio out. Mind, it could be modified if you're experienced at pooging such beasties - I'd say it sports an architecture almost identical to the SH-3, which is of similar vintage. I have one, and it's pretty cool. High pass VCF makes it different. I have an advert for it from a '78 Keyboard mag. Can you believe it has AFTERTOUCH? Basically, it's somewhat of a mono preset synth, that you can modify certain parameters on, filter(a great one at that) and mod routings to filter, osc, and vca. The only envelope control is a switch for long or short sustain :( I talked to a guy at Kenton, and he said they don't make a MIDI>CV converter for it, because it 'just doesn't work'.. Well, I'm not giving up that easily. I'm working out the problem on the drawing board right now! I can't just let it sit there. Soon, it will be part of my happy sequencing family. So, here you go. The SH-2000 is a cool little monosynth, 3 octave keyboard, and 30 presets. You have a little control over the sounds, but not much. Once you have a preset switched on(those colorful duck bill organ tabs) you can switch the filter to manual to control cutoff, resonance, and modulation amount from lfo sine wave to cutoff. There is aftertouch, that can be routed to 5 different things(in any combination) volume, wow(filter cutoff), growl(fast lfo to filter), vibrato amount, and pitch bend(raises or lowers the pitch according to how hard you press the key). There's a random note generator, and modulation speed. There's also portamento control. The only envelope control is a switch for long or short release. There is a hold switch that will repeat the note being held down, sync'ed to the lfo. No CV in or out. The only interface jack is audio out. I have plans for it though. This may be the beginnings of a powerful synth when modded. I don't feel too bad about modding it, it's in the lower-fair condition catagory. As for the sounds, they're really cool. I like them alot. There are a lot of sounds that have high pass qualities to them, but I'm not sure it is a high pass filter that's doing it, anymore. I really could use this a lot, if it only had some sort of interface to it. And BTW the CV is 1.2V/oct, so it's no simple task to interface it with other equipment, i.e. you can't just bring jacks out to the panel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 6 4 .-------. 7 / \ |=============================| 3 | | 8 | BRIAN COATES | | \\ | | nobrand@teleport.com | 2 \ \\ / 9 |=============================| 1`-------' \|\/|/ RESONANCE.= 10! = /|/\|\ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --
