LaFata" Cc: analogue@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: 606 BD MODS Funny you should ask, as I have been modding my 606 all week. I've been using the Mix magazine article (thanks, David L) in combination with my schematics, misc pots, etc. I found that the Mix article (I only have part one) has one error in the schematic for adding a 5k pot for the hi-hat BPF cutoff freq (this sounds really great, btw) and was thinking of posting the basics of the article (the mods are basic hihat BPF cuttoff, BD Decay, BD tune) but was not sure of the copyright issues. I figured I'd changed the values of some of the caps and trimpots anyway and that I'd at least be fixing his diagram error. I could not immediately find the 82nF caps listed (is this nano-Farads, or does "nF" really mean "mF" or "uF". I've never seen caps listed in "nF". I tried calling my local electronics guru-friends, but they were not home. The Mix article suggests replacing a particular pair of caps (56nF?) with 82nF ones and I think that this is supposed to extend the decay a little. Doing the mod without the caps and the BD-tune CV-in transistor makes the BD sort of like this /\__ /\ / \ ...whereas it used to sound like ---> / --\ ...so the decay drops seemingly as fast, but there appears to be more sustained "note" to the sound. The BD tune works, but needs to be really boosted at low pitches. I couldn't tell that I was getting much lower than the original pitch, which is already pretty low. The neatest thing was that putting a pot between the snare noise level pot and the ground made a kind of FM'd noise effect that was great. I don't have any of that documentation with me here, but I'll try to type up what I'm doing when I'm done. By the way, I think that the BD tune resistor is R212 off the top of my head. Just try bridging (only) it with a pot or your finger, if the just the pitch goes up, that is probably it. I recently used this technique with a speak and read and added a joystick (2x100k linear pots) to control fast/slow speech x normal/garbled speech and added trimpots to place the ranges for best effect. Also, I added a multi-turn 500k pot to a Technics 1500 (crap mixing t-table) 45RPM speed so that it is basically +10%/-100% (can play records from a crawl up through +10% of 45rpm). If I were to make a dual multi-turn 500k pot the only resistance, and wire it such that the 2 parts of the pot were in series (thus turning the pot to max was a total of 1megaOhm), would bridging one of the dual parts of the pot give me half the resistance and probably exactly half the RPMs? It would be great to have a switch that cut my RPM's exactly in half (or close) for mixing purposes... Thanks for any technical advice, and I'll post more about the mods when I can find those 82 nF caps (or close) Solenoid On Thu, 16 Apr 1998, Christopher M.
