Ivo SUMMARY INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITING PATTERNS ON THE KORG KPR-77 Use "Write/Training" mode to play drum pads in real-time. You can hold down "Accent" while pressing a pad to hear the accent effect on a sound. Most of these instructions require that the KPR-77 be "stopped," i.e. not playing. If something doesn't work, it's usually because of this or because you did not execute the instructions in the proper order. To select a pattern for writing: 1) select the desired group 2) switch the MODE switch from Play to Write/Training while holding down the BASIC BANK key for the pattern number to which you wish to write. (if MODE was already switched to Write, switch back to Play before going through the above steps). To switch between Claps/Cymbals and Flammed/Single strike TOMs: 1) hold down the FUNC SET key while pressing key "15" (with the legend CYM/CLAPS) to switch between cymbals and claps 2) hold down the FUNC SET key while pressing key "16" (with the legend TOM FLAM) to switch between flammed and single-hit toms. (An indication of your settings will appear to the left of the bar indicators on the bottom edge of the LCD. Claps selection will display "CLPS," flam selection will show "FLAM," and cymbals and single-strike toms selections will leave the display blank.) Set the resolution and length: 1) Hold down the FUNC SET key and press one of the BASIC BANK keys from 11-14 to set the resolution (diagrams under these keys indicate the resolution). 2) Hold down the FUNC SET key and press one of the BASIC BANK keys from 1-8 to set pattern length in quarter notes (one quarter note to 8 quarter notes). (If you select a length longer than the resolution allows, the "FULL" indicator will appear to the right of the bar indicators on the bottom edge of the LCD.) Erase the existing pattern: 1) Select the group and pattern if you haven't already done so. 2) Hold down the CHAIN WRITE key (legend: ERASE) and press STEP DOWN (legend: ALL INST). You'll hear a metronome click to signify that it worked. Write the pattern in real-time (step recording instructions below): After following the above instructions for setting resolution, length, etc.: 1) Press START/STOP to begin; you will hear the metronome and the downbeat has a higher pitched "beep." 2) Play the instrument keys. The KPR-77 will quantize your playing according to the set resolution. (You will be able to see the step position in the bar indicator along the bottom edge of the LCD.) Editing in real-time: 1) To erase hits by a single instrument, hold down the CHAIN WRITE (ERASE) key and then the appropriate instrument key at the exact time that the pattern passes the undesired hit. 2) To erase all hits by a single instrument, do the same thing but hold the instrument key down until the pattern goes through one, complete pass. Viewing your work: 1) Stop the pattern. 2) Hold down BASIC (BASIC VIEW) key and press the instrument key for the instrument whose pattern you wish to see. Step programming: 1) Set the parameters as detailed above (select bank, pattern, resolution, length, etc.) 2) Press an instrument key to place it in the pattern. The bar indicator will show you the step to which you're writing. Writing a hit will advance the KPR-77 to the next step automatically 3) Press the STEP UP key to step through the pattern, effectively inserting rests between notes if you're writing to a previously blank pattern. Editing while step programming: 1) Make sure the pattern isn't running and use the VIEW function ("BASIC [VIEW]"+instrument key) to select the appropriate instrument for editing. 2) Use the STEP UP key to advance to the step you wish to edit. 3) Press the instrument key to write that instrument into that step OR hold down CHAIN WRITE (ERASE) and the instrument key to erase that instrument from that step.
