We are a collective of technological artists working in the areas of electronic sound composition, video production, computer animation and other related areas. We support our members in many ways through interaction and vast amounts of technical support. Our explainations of ourselves could go on forever but this small peice of text is acting only as an introduction to our begining of network usage. The KRONIC OSCILLATOR is our six-weekly newsletter avidly read by members. We have selected small sections of this cronicle and have posted it to USENET. To get access to the full package. With lots of pictures and lots of rambling by members concerning devices of old and new subsribe to our 'SNAIL MAIL' mailing list. Every time we create a KO we will make certain sections publicly available... Lastly, we welcome response... Hackers of the technological world of creation UNITE!! The tracks on this piece of vinyl show Clan Analogue's variation of styles within electronic composition. Everything from experimental percussion and rhythmic ambience to a range of dance styles. Clan Analogue is a Sydney based collective of technology based artists. We started as an enthusiastic group of analogue users and gradually became known locally for our high quality orchestrations and compositions within the field. As the months have worn on, many other interests have grown within the collec- tive. The obvious extensive use of digital equipment has played a vital part in this vinyl product. A strong link between local and international DJ's has proved to be a mutually benefi- cial. But there are many other areas, video production and computer/visual artistry as well as a popular trend towards science fiction and comic writing. This has led us to tag ourselves as a technological collective, all forms of expression that have a connection to technology. In the near future we will expand our productions to cater for these other interests along side our consistent manu- facturing of audio (vinyl and CD) recordings. The few promotional copies of this E.P. have been released to people we believe to be important in the independent market of sound production and composition. We are interested in being distributed internationally for we are soon to continue the release of other locally based acts Within the sleeve is an information sheet which outlines to a certain point, the motivations of the composers, these work along side the sound pieces, but also allow the tracks to speak for themselves. We also would like to include interested counterparts and consumers on our internal mailing list. This will make available to you our newsletter that basically outlines the happenings of some of Australia's Electronic composers. Our network of alternative producers and artists within various electronic mediums is growing worldwide. Australian composed dance and other electronic sound compositions are becoming known as the most distinctly character- istic in the world. Australian's ability to take impressions from our many backgrounds and translate this into a very honest individual nature is embeded deep into our culture. There is also a very 'Clan' type of sound, one that is well organised but authenticly innovative , chaotic. Ordered. Disordered... Due to the geographic separation from our counterparts in Europe and the North America, we tend to have the habit of using a slightly less orthadox way of going about things. Australia is good place for basing an international network for it's position beside Asia and it's strong political and cultural links with fellow western countries. If you also wish to contribute to our newsletter reporting some other vital information, it would be most welcome. The following are extracts from the KRONIC OSCILLATOR. CLAN RECORDING SCHEME-"Blue vinyl bliss" As notified , and constantly updated at clan gatherings the recording project is up and running and going nicely. The first E.P. is on sale and costs only $10 wholesale (to subscribed clan members and participating businesses). If you are not subscribed the vinyl will cost $15 from Clan direct. It is available over the counter at around $12 at the following record shops. DISCO CITY , CENTRAL STATION RECORDS , RED EYE RECORDS, WARPED RECORDS (KINGS CROSS). If you are working in a business and wish to stock our recordings you can contact CLAN ON THE CONTACT ADDRESS ON THE COVER or PHONE ++61-2-4984988 or via e-mail to: mdagn@pos.apana.org.au The Ep itself is a thing of beauty . Stamped in BLUE VINYL with black streaks and cut at a higher level than regular domestic vinyl pressings (now virtually extinct), the vinyl quality is very good. On 'this side' the e.p displays an array of experimental pieces. First up is the Apple-core techno track 'vinyl SADDIST'from XTROVERT. On this track, Cowboy X shows the listener that scratching is not out of style just currently mis-used. The sharp stabs and grinding background tones over the top of interesting looped drums, kick in a swift pace. As the track continues the introduction of Moog resonant LFO progesion give the peice the final element it needs -bizzareness. Next up is SWLABR -try pronouncing that. It's SWw-LaarBRrrr with 'ORGANIC'. Sherif displays his true instincts in this piece. The only artist on the compilation to complete recording and mixdown in the alotted time, he shows signs of SYLVIAN mixed with KRAFTWERK. But these are not his only impressions, which is revealled by his use of a 'talking drum percussive loop' from his cherrished Ginger Baker CD. This boy is a big CREAM fanatic.. And has aquired the nickname KAREEM c/- MARK WORRALL As the track was conceived as a challenge to resume the farmilliar use of modulated white noise in lead lines (past used in other tracks LOCUST and KILLER FINGER. Finally on 'THIS SIDE' is Alistair MALLET MAN Wallis with his experimental midi/accoustic percussive peice "portrait of a crazed soc " KIT KAT KID shuffles off an fantastic variety of experimental rhythms. The moods brought forward go from soothing deep mellow sections to clangy boisterous parts. As an improvised reproduction of a live performance unvei- led over a year before recording this track may be seen to have alot of th- ought, in some ways this may be true but the bare fact that Dr drumKAT resurected this peice in under four days shows it fresh shine... Unforgetable rid- dimssssssssssssssssssssssssssss... 'That side' reveals another aspect of the nature of CLAN COMPOSITIONS ,precise but accurate timing. The first arrangement on this side is by the PUZZLE installation. Consisting of large amounts of establi- shed training these two have shown them- selves to be a quality live act in sydney incorporating live Vinyl spinning/mixing as a large part of their act. The origin- al peice aimed for the vinyl was a combi- nation of this together with another am- bient introduction which was nicknamed after a coffee manufacturer. This peice was dropped as it did not live up to the high expectations of the group. What better to follow up these two but the 'other two' TELHARMONEOM. With this track 'LISTEN TO THE EARTH' the listener is bathed with a massive variety of mood swings within the structure of the piece, maybe revealing a rather scitsophrenic (how do you spell that word) nature of these two quite eager experimentalists. Whatever it is the two have done it with a special nack for picking the right riffs to catch the listener off guard and positively dazed. Listen to the track...I mean the EARTH! OCEANIA is next up and Jamies peice 'ASCEND' leaves no room for boredom . Could be described as the purest of harmonies streaked with a tinge of chaotic characteristics. THe third moon mix has no beat in it apart from the occassional hat shuffle and big bass rumble but dance mixes of this track can be acquired thru Jamie himself. This track has been described by one of Sydneys top DJs, who has no care for its lack of 909, as "PERFECT!!!!!!" Future projects are in the pipeline... STAY TUNED (become a member) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLAN 6 REVIEW Clan 6 was held at Kirribilli at the home of Dr. Danny Dun. Due to a state wide train strike all who were invited found it extremely difficult to find a vacant peice of road to drive and then park their car. First to arrive was Clan's first Wollongong member who had managed to get to the north side of the bridge early, Krishan got in also before the doo started but had to skip out early to finish the last stages of the construction of his pre-production studio. As the night went on the equipt- ment started to churn in ... Two Roland Sh 's( a 3a and a 2), Two technics 1200's + a mixer, a Wavestation AD , Drumulator , and a Jupiter 4 . Last up was 'MALLET MAN' (Alistair) himself with his s950 and his mallet KAT. Lets not forget Toby's ry303. Dan the man called the doo to order and discovered that all the inhabitants wanted to do was get into the wealth of technology at their fingertips. First up the SWLABR sherif and SAIBOT showed all who were there what an RY can do.... this went on for half an hour complete with zaps splurts and bleeps Toby had specificly programmed for the gathering and his ap- pearance at 'Ov thee earth tribe'..... As this went on many a c@ne was consummed - a c@ne here a c@ne there - bit from, them bit from us . Mr whippy was smilling . Next up a tape from sharif , some from Hazkem (now known as OCEANIA ) NAdnerb showed off a really dreadful recording of his latest Xtrovert remix which since has proven itself as the best clan remix yet. As these played the plans to do the now launched E.P were uncovered. Those who wished to take part made it public and the next phase of the meeting came into play. Dan Dun displayed the new pamphlets for the Peavey digital and Akai equipt- ment . After consumming a c@ne or two Mallet Man jumped to action and demonstrated the infamous advantages of Midi PERCussion. Alistair is a conservatorium trained pan and pot tapper and shuffled out some smooth demonstrative riddims....... As the night went on more tracks were played more and NONAZ NOMIS displayed his wavestations capabilities as an FX unit as we had no Midi keyboard to control it with. But as the FX was all it was planned to be used for simon was happy. The JP4 emitted soars and warps beyond the imagination of the others in the Jupiter family as its 'Weird sounding' reputation was lived up to. Thru the FX it sounded great -sequenced by the drumu- lator. As there were a lack of rca cables all the audio outputs (using 1/4 inch jacks) had to take a detour thru the sh2's external inputs so cket to get to the amp. Many a clan member had fun quelching the resonance slider over the s950's sample output.... All in all CLAN 6 was remembered as a far more social gathering. It was a meeting which introduced not only many new mem- bers from Sydney, Wollongong AND Canberra but one that introduced the manditory $30 membershit fee... This fee/subscription was meant to be the be all and end all for all who did not pay by that date but has now been extended due to the MEGA TRAIN STRIKE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MIDIPHYLES* MIDIPHYLES* MIDIPHYLES *Thank you to our freinds from surry hills LISA , TREVOR and BRAD for assistance with DOOR BITCHING and thank you to Shawn otherwise known as rockafella for his financial assistance.... *It was noted by an avid Clan member that at the New Year's Eve Rat party this year , Vision 45 whipped the ass off the international act "the Prodigy". This serves them right for using the name of a quite decent monosynth that they DON'T use... *It was suggested that due to there being many clan members making their own video clips that we start a quarteryearly Clan Compilation Video. With all the recent interest in vid work and clan vynle compilations going so strongly were jumping at the chance. All supporters of this idea, make it public at Clan 888888888888. *At Clan's live nite on 16th of feb Two new faces to in house clan work were apparent. Strange master from QLD showed off how much you can do on an AMIGATRON ... LUNA*C showed she was beyond the promoters inital perceptions by doing quite a brilliant set. Nadnerb, Mikey peak and co. are jumping at the chance to give her more chanes. LUNA*C is currently playing at BRILLIANT at sight. *Interest is growing in the sector of word inventing... the expression 'PIGGY RABIT' was derived to explain the selected test pressing of a vynle EP played continuously to test deterioration... The expression can be seen as a cross between PIGGY BANK and BUNNY RABIT but this has no relevance to its meaning...or does it... *The quality of Clan Member is quite diverse , one new person on the mailing list is going into production with a new line of lasers +osciliscope aplications and real time MIDI control........... *Thanks to FRANK CON for his contributions in the form of some of the KRON. OSC. graphics featured in this edition. Frank is the master of the desktop publishing arena and runs HUGE MAC STUDIOS WITH GIGIBYTE DRIVES. *An interesting turn up at 'Sensory peak' was a character that the door people found wandering around on the street. A loony dood in a chicken outfit stumbled in and danced for a while with JJacobs then swiftly leaft to continue his journey...Organisers were seen to be responsible and this is for the good of us all... *Clan E.P 1 contains a track by Alistair and one by SWLABR both can claim that they are part of the ever evolving percussive side of the Clan. Alistair's track reveals this drumkat nature fully and is well worth getting into. For more info on the percussive heds contact clan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE TAPE WORM Over the last few months a compilation tape or two have been put together, the first being a selection of works ranging from thrash/bleep to dub/ambient. The second has just been released and consists of the following: two tracks from 'TOI' that experiment with bizarre analogue sweeps and vocal 'BITCH' samples, one track from 'Swlabr' called 'Estranged (husband)' , one track from Mark Ireland called 'Resin 8' with Seil modular sounds and Machinations samples, one track from 'Saibot/Telharmoneom' called 'sub hameabus (mix 1)', Domenic from 'Xtrovert' threw in the wicked 'Vinyl sadist' and 'Expanse' from Clan Canberra threw in a track called 'Fantastique'. This wide selection of tracks was so huge, that other tracks from 'T8' had to be left off and put on no.3 which is currently being gathered and mastered up in Warimoo. All compilation tape entries must be handed in at meetings. They must be a disposable 90min tape (not a ma- ster) with only the tracks you wish to include on that compila-tion tape. These tracks will then be com- piled onto 1/4" reel to reel and re-recorded back onto the same cas- sette. This system helps the wiping of master tapes not to happen. Also included with your tape should be a submission form that outlines your composition and allows CLAN AN. to put together some text which may help with promotion. These forms are available upon arrival at clan ga- therings. Compilation tape 3 will be good..... BE ON IT. Experiments , ambient peices , new tracks , old tracks , segments from jamm sessions anything.....................seeming that the next few meetings will be stressing tapes from everyone ,there probably is no option. Listening to the responses from mem- bers who have sat around (as a group of sydneys top composers) and gathe- red impressions, comments and other general feedback ,the act of parti- cipating in the internal tape compi- lations is showing itself as a vital tool towards expanding ideas and ta- stes. Those from the un-clan who smasmoticly refuse to submit mater- ial for the reason for the fear of being SAMPLED or releasing vital st- yles that are very personal are ob- vioulsy not concious of the benifits that communally occur within the co- llective ... BLA BLA BLA. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ INTERSTATE MEMBERS The network is growing within Australia. The word is out that we exist and allrea- dy many an interested party from other states has called Clan HQ to get on the mailing list. Many $30 subscriptions have allready been received. Clan Canberra has been set up for a few months now and has a total of about eight to fifteen mem- bers. The same amount that Sydney had at the same stage. Within the Canberra wing are a few up and coming composers due to leave their mark on the CLAN COMPILATION EPs with possibly two tracks going on NO.2. Helping out with recording will be John Wicks who works in one of Canberra's larger studios and has allready played a major part in recent AC/DC remixes. >From MELBOURNE joining the collective are two new members both who find work in the sound industry. Robin Whitle from REAL WORLD interfaces has been a member for over four months and the staff from BLAKE AND PERRY who claim to be Melb's IBM specialists- MPU401s are cool... >From up north in the Q L D we have that small group of hair dressers come composers following in the path of BOXCAR. Distinct links with VISION 45 have been made and VOLITION KNOW ABOUT IT. In Jindalee we have a freind called TREVOR who prosides in a studio during daylight hours. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is a review of Clan Meeting no.7 held at randwick in our promotional manager's flat.... The mob merged upon Chris Bell's tiny abode on Friday the ... of ... 199? Noted for there presence were three members of Clan Canberra, Bo, Jon and whats-his-name, who had sped down in a verada v6 that afternoon.Yuppie Scum. My dad has a Verada. They're very nice to drive. Also to be spotted amongst the throngs were Xtrovert, and Leon from Puzzle. First up was everyone killed time attacking Moogs with bare fingers, in the standard Clan Meeting traditional equipment centre. As the avid members of the Clan delved into the deep majestic sounds of the Clan setup, Sharif was not eating chips fried in animal fats. Brendan called the meeting to order just as Bo and Chris went out to fetch more seating in the form of milkcrates. When they got back they had already missed half the preveiw of the DAT recording of the Clan EP no. 1. All parties there responded in approvalof all the tracks, many "volunteering" to be on the second EP. Michael gave the meeting a rundown on the live night at Sight, Sensory PEAK PEAK PEAK P Eak P ea k.. p e... a ..k. This proposed fortnightly Clan club night was designed as an outlet for all Clan members actively producing experimental environments. Mikey mike showed his initial designs for the hand bill. This was also the first recorded sighting of the now famous 'peak ball'. As the EP played, Nadnerb casually explained to the congregation the processes and the costs of the vinyl pressing. As he uttered his final words, a cool breeze swept through the room, and he wiped his brow. Next up was the bit about the CD Roms, Stuart OOst from Interactive Arts offered people a part in his forthcoming projects. Possiblities were discussed between those who went to the trouble of coming to the gathering. Stuart keeps in constant contact with other computer artists constantly and opened many fresh new doors for CLAN to travel. As Sharif looked on hungrily, Chris downed his second box of cheezels. There were no vegan dishes provided as hors-d'oeuvres at this gathering, and the host has been subsequently reprimanded. Clan Canberra had a chat about what they'd all been up to lately and inhaled the only @llegal substances that were to be noted on the night. The Verada-endowed visitors left early in order to get back to Canberra fast. Chris' dog-bowl overflowed with cigerattes, as the room clattered to the sound of idle chatter over a frenzied analogue background. The Moog source, as well as the 808 and the 909 and the Juno 106 accompanied by Expanse's unpowered Alesis D4 were all there. Michael Westcot who heard about us through Nu-Town Studios, um... played his latest trance tracks. The meeting was noted for its lack of dr@gs. Everyone was gone by midnight. Basically, the whole thing was held during the recording of the Ep and acted as a bit of an in-house internal end-of-recording launch nite / party. Just say something like that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLAN CLASSIFIEDS... Wanted -assistants to put together the 'Kronic oscilator'...
