78xx are all positive voltage regulators.  xx is the voltage.  for
example 7812 is a 12  volt positive regulator.

79xx are all negative and xx is the voltage.

All 78xx regulators have this pinout:

1  input (raw filtered DC, positive with respect to ground)
2  ground or common
3  output (regulated voltage equal to positive xx)

All 79xx regulators have this pinout:

1  ground or common
2  input (raw filtered DC, negative with respect to ground)
3  output (regulated voltage equal to negative xx)
